A Sensory Tool for Emotional Regulation
Intro:
Create your own calming sensory jar at home using everyday items. Perfect for little ones who need help navigating big feelings.
Instructions:
What You Need:
-
A clear jar or plastic bottle with a secure lid (e.g., empty jam jar or recycled water bottle)
-
Warm water (about 3/4 full)
-
Clear glue or glitter glue (about 1/4 cup)
-
Fine glitter in colors your child likes (1-2 tablespoons)
-
Optional: food coloring (a few drops) or small decorative items like sequins or beads
-
Strong tape (optional, to seal the lid securely)
Instructions:
-
Fill the Jar: Pour warm water into the jar until it is about three-quarters full.
-
Add Glue: Add about a quarter cup of clear glue or glitter glue to the water. The glue thickens the mixture, making the glitter float slowly for a calming effect.
-
Add Glitter: Sprinkle 1-2 tablespoons of fine glitter into the jar. You can mix different colors for visual interest.
-
Add Color: If you want, add a few drops of food coloring to tint the water gently.
-
Optional Decorations: Add small sequins or beads for extra sparkle and texture.
-
Mix: Screw the lid on tightly and shake the jar well until the glue, water, and glitter are fully mixed.
-
Seal the Lid: For safety, seal the lid with strong tape to prevent spills or choking hazards.
-
How to Use: When your child feels overwhelmed or upset, encourage them to shake the jar and watch the glitter slowly settle to the bottom. This visual distraction helps them focus, breathe, and calm down.
Benefits:
-
Encourages mindfulness and emotional regulation
-
Provides a sensory distraction during moments of stress or frustration
-
Easy to make and customize with your child’s favorite colors and decorations
